Imagine a country that combines the charms of Europe and Africa with the warmth of the Middle East. You will find ancient cultures interwoven with stunning landscapes and medinas that give glimpses into the imperial past. The whole family can now fall for Morocco’s charm on an action-packed journey from Marrakech to Essaouira. This adventure will take you to everything from deserts covered in camels to beautiful beaches. Morocco’s charm is hard to resist, whether you are in spice-infused back streets, beneath crumbling Roman ruins, or under the snowcapped Atlas Mountains.

This trip is a must-see

  • Morocco is an amazing place to indulge your senses. You can sip sweet mint tea in rural villages and see goats climbing trees in desert. Then, tap your feet to Marrakech’s traditional Berber musicians.
  • Stay with a Berber family to get a glimpse into traditional Moroccan life.
  • Essaouira has a mix of Jewish, Portuguese, and French influences. Enjoy fresh seafood, discover art galleries, and take in the stunning blue-skinned townscape.
  • From the back of a camel, witness the majestic rolling waves of Atlantic ocean

Are you sure this is the right trip for you?

  • Many travellers consider the camel trek along Atlantic Ocean Day 5 to be a highlight of their trip. You can also walk alongside the camels if you don’t want to ride one. The walk takes about an hour and is very relaxing.
  • It can be difficult to walk to the Berber homestay located in the High Atlas Mountains. If you’d like to travel with a mule, please speak to your leader.
  • Morocco’s summer heat can be very extreme. Layers, sun protection, and plenty of water are important for those who travel in warmer months. Warm clothes are important as it can get very cold at night.
  • This trip covers a lot of ground and requires some travel. If you or your child have motion sickness, the road to the High Atlas Mountains can be very windy.

Day 1: Marrakech

Salaam Aleikum! Morocco is your home. Marrakech is a delight for the senses. It’s a place full of Berber music, spice markets, Berber carpets, delicious foods, acrobats, and fragrant gardens. As there are no planned activities until 5pm, you can arrive anytime today. If you have booked an arrival transfer, please see an Intrepid Travel representative when you arrive at the airport.

The hotel is just outside of the city walls surrounding the Medina. It’s about a 30-minute walk from the main square, Djemaa el Fna. You will also find many local shops and restaurants nearby. Relax and settle in.

Day 2: Aroumd

Today’s adventure starts with a drive through the majestic High Atlas Mountains to Imlil (approx. 2 hours), which is the largest village in Mizane Valley. After storing your main luggage, you will continue on foot for 1 hour to Aroumd, a traditional mountain village. Your leader can arrange for a mule to take you if you are not comfortable walking.

The remote village of Aroumd, perched on a rocky outcrop offers breathtaking views over the High Atlas Mountains. It also provides an opportunity to experience traditional Berber culture. We stayed one night in an Aroumd family-run mountain home (gite). Enjoy Berber hospitality and food while you are surrounded by the aroma of bread and woodstoves.

NOTE: Proper footwear is required for the walk from Imlil, Aroumd, and further to Sidi Chamharouch shrine. If you are looking for sturdy boots, consider bringing them. However, a pair of well-made walking shoes with a rigid and grippy sole is sufficient.

Day 5: Essaouira

It’s time to take a quick trip to Taroudant (approximately thirty minutes) after breakfast. You will spend time in this beautiful, conservative town, often called “Little Marrakech”. Moroccan leather products are extremely popular. Here you can see how the skins of the animals are dried to make the leather. This is a great opportunity to see an old-fashioned craft and take home a piece of Morocco hand-made.

Next, we will travel along the coast to Sidi Kaouki (approximately four hours). As you travel along, take in the amazing scenery and mount a camel. This could be one of your highlights. Take a picnic lunch at the beach and then board the bus to Essaouira. This takes approximately 30 minutes.

The charming artists’ town was once a Portuguese trading colony. It also used to be home to large Jewish and British populations. The Mogador group of rocky islands is the town’s focal point. It is also surrounded by a vast expanse of sandy beaches, dunes and dunes. It is still a bustling fishing port and the pretty harbour is full of colourful fishing boats that go out every morning.

Today you are free to explore Essaouira however you like. The small center is easily accessible by foot. The beach is clean and pleasant and is great for a stroll. You can also visit the nearby fish markets and the harbour, where you can see the daily auction. It is recommended to eat a fresh-cooked meal made from the day’s catch. You can browse the numerous shops and galleries that feature unique local art. It is well-known for its delicately crafted and inlaid Thuya wood. Walking through the streets is pleasant because of the scent of the oil used to polish the wood’s rich colours.

Accommodation

  • Hotel Souiri (1 night)

All Meals Included

  • Breakfast

Day 7: Marrakech

Leave Essaouira and travel inland to Marrakech (approximately three hours). Take a walking tour through the city center, stopping at the main attractions along the way to Djemaa El-Fna’s main square and souq. Souks are known for having a variety of trades and crafts. This means that shoemakers, jewellers, potters, and weavers are all located in the same street. You can learn how to bargain in Morocco here. The extraordinary selection of merchandise displayed will make you want to buy some Moroccan slippers or spices. It almost feels like a medieval market. You will be entertained by snake charmers and jugglers. As food stalls prepare local delights, the evening is filled with wonderful aromas.
